USS Nimitz (CVN-68), the oldest active aircraft carrier in service, has returned to sea for the Southern Seas 2026 deployment.
Commissioned in 1975, the carrier arrived in the Caribbean on May 21 alongside Carrier Air Wing 17, USS Gridley, and USNS Patuxent. The deployment will take the strike group around South America and is expected to be one of the final chapters in the ship’s long operational history.
Originally scheduled for retirement, USS Nimitz received a one-year service extension and is now set to remain in service until March 2027.
The deployment has sparked significant interest among Marine Radar users, with searches for USS Nimitz increasing notably this week. The highest activity came from users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Iran.
